Banned Books Week 2022

Mark your calendars: the 2022 celebration of Banned Books Week will be September 18 - 24!

Banned Books Week is an annual period of awareness that celebrates the freedom to read, draws attention to banned and challenged books, and highlights persecuted individuals. Started in 1982, the movement began when teachers, librarians and booksellers noticed a surge in the number of 'banned' titles being challenged in schools and bookstores.

This year's theme is 'Books Unite Us, Censorship Divides Us.' Join ArtCenter Library in celebrating, discussing, and exploring this year's list of Banned Books, highlighting the value of free and open access to information for all.

Check out our display of favorite Banned Books—this year, our staff have curated selections for our online resources. Visit the OverDrive collection to see our newest featured fiction, including banned comic books and anime.

Feel free to ask our staff about their favorite banned book, and share yours! Exercise your freedom of speech and spread the word.

Hungry for more resources? Check out the Directory of Banned Books, a database put together by the folks at Carnegie Mellon, profiling a selected Banned Book with the histories of the author, controversies of the text itself, and more.
