ArtCenter Archives & Special Collections is launching a new digital exhibits website to spotlight items from the archival collections.
We’re kicking it off with two photography exhibits.
Developing Professional Photographers presents a history of ArtCenter’s Photography and Imaging Department with some content dating all the way back to the early years of ArtCenter, from 1931-1975.
Jules Bates: A Photographer Ahead of His Time features selections of Bates’ professional and student work of portraits, fashion, album cover art, Los Angeles punk scene, and New Wave fashion. Bates was a Los Angeles-based photographer who was the photo editor for L.A. Weekly and co-founded Artrouble with David Allen and Phyllis Cohen in 1978. Artrouble was an art collective that created artwork and album covers for punk and new wave bands. Tragically, Bates died in a motorcycle hit and run in 1982. In 2008 he received a posthumous honorary doctorate at ArtCenter.
These exhibits were made possible through the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program.
