ArtCenter Library Living Canvas Guidelines

The ArtCenter Library encourages the use of our Living Canvas wall as a space for creative expression, exchange of ideas, and community engagement. We strive to create an inclusive and respectful environment where all voices can be heard, in alignment with ArtCenter’s commitment to academic freedom and free expression. The following guidelines are intended to help maintain that balance while ensuring the space remains welcoming and respectful for all members of our community.

1. Creative Freedom & Expression
● All members of the ArtCenter community are invited to contribute to the blackboard with drawings, messages, or questions. We encourage a diverse range of ideas and expressions.
● Contributions can be related to personal expression, ArtCenter events or activities, creative ideas, or academic topics.

2. Respect for Community
● We encourage a culture of mutual respect. Contributions should not promote hate speech, discrimination, harassment, or content that targets individuals or groups based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or other protected statuses.
● Content that is intended to provoke harm or spread false information, including personal attacks or defamation, will not be tolerated.

3. Time-Sensitive Contributions
● We ask contributors to be mindful of space and time. As the blackboard fills up, older content may be erased to make room for new contributions.
● Contributions may be cleared periodically by Library staff to maintain a dynamic and evolving space for fresh ideas. Wiping of the board will take place periodically; notifications will not be sent out.

4. Removal of Content
● While we aim to uphold the First Amendment, Academic Freedom and respect creative freedom, content that violates the spirit of inclusivity and mutual respect may be removed. This includes content deemed hateful, harmful, or otherwise inappropriate based on the College’s policies.
● Library staff may remove any content that is found to be in violation of these guidelines.

5. Moderation and Reporting
● If you believe a drawing or message on the blackboard violates these guidelines, you may report it to the Library Front Desk or email us at library@artcenter.edu
● The Library reserves the right to moderate and address concerns in consultation with campus administrators, including the Center for Student Experience, the Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Marketing and Communications.

6. Promotional Material
● The blackboard is not intended for traditional advertisements or promotional posters. For promotional material regarding events or activities, please refer to ArtCenter’s On Campus Promotion and Poster Policy.

7. Sustainability & Cleanliness
● We ask contributors to use the provided materials and tools responsibly. Please avoid damaging the board or surrounding areas and clean up after use. The Library provides non-toxic fume-free liquid chalk markers to support sustainability efforts.

We hope this space becomes a living canvas for the exchange of ideas and creativity while upholding the values of respect, inclusivity, and freedom of expression.
