Why Faculty Love the Library

Faculty, wouldn’t it be great if you could just ask the library to buy a book that you’d like to use for your class and show to your students? Guess what—you can! Looking for ideas or resources to enhance your teaching? Meet our Liaison Librarians, a team of subject specialists that are ready to help!

Liaisons are ready to partner with faculty members by helping in creating course Research Guides and providing in-class library instruction, demonstrating library technologies and online resources, as well as highlighting areas of our collection that may be especially pertinent to a specific class or project. Liaison Librarians can order materials for a wide variety of courses and suggest newly published titles relevant to a special class or a new curriculum. Your subject Liaison Librarian would be happy to schedule an in-person consultation with you to discuss your teaching and research needs.

Many faculty members frequently visit the ArtCenter library to peruse new books and other materials and gain information from insightful interactions with Liaison Librarians. For example, Margo Bistis who teaches in the Humanities & Sciences Department notes, “Over the years of my teaching humanities courses at ArtCenter, the Library staff has been knowledgeable and efficient at ordering a range of materials, including books, DVDs, and the Artstor Digital Library for education and research.”

Another member of the faculty, John Britton, who teaches a variety of classes in Transportation Design and beyond, spoke of the value in the cross-disciplinary approach often found in many departments at ArtCenter, which is also reflected in our Library's collections and services. He calls ArtCenter Library “an amazing resource,” which he values not only for providing access to information, but also as a space where a collaborative inquiry between Liaisons and faculty members happens. He sees a "great synergy” and a “multi-disciplinary approach” in his interactions with Liaison Librarians, which helps inform his teaching and enhance student learning. As the field of Transportation Design expands to include “social, political, economic, technical, environmental and ecological aspects,” John sees a great opportunity for faculty to collaborate with Liaisons across different fields and areas of knowledge. This breadth of approach, he believes, will help students get prepared to be responsible designers in the society of tomorrow.

Just as these faculty members and others have found value in our services, we encourage you to create your own possibilities for collaboration. Please visit the library or make an appointment to engage with the expertise of our Liaison Librarians. A Liaison Librarian is available for Research Help at both campus Libraries. Stop by, or call 626 396-2233. You can also contact the Liaison for your specific subject directly.

The ArtCenter Library is dedicated to building successful collaborations with faculty in order to strengthen teaching and learning across the campus and support pedagogical goals. Our staff is always ready to help as we work together towards student success!
