The ArtCenter Library will be modifying our method for providing access to the Kanopy platform of streaming films starting immediately. We regret needing to take this step, but the rapid and unexpected increase in our Kanopy expenditures requires that we do so.
ArtCenter pays for Kanopy films on a per-title basis. Under our current model, the first three uses of a film are free, but the fourth use triggers a one-year license for that film. As Kanopy has become more popular, our streaming media expenses have become unsustainable.
Films already licensed will remain available on the Kanopy platform for the remainder of their one-year license period.
What do I do to get a film for a course I’m teaching?
Contact your liaison librarian. They will investigate options, including licensing the film from Kanopy.
What other options do I have to watch films from the ArtCenter Library?
ArtCenter has has over 11,000 titles in our DVD collection. Check our online library catalog, DotSearch, to search for a title. Don’t have a DVD player? The ArtCenter Library lends out portable DVD players to connect to your computer and/or TV.
Information about our streaming media collection can be found on our Research Guide, titled Online Resources: Streaming Media.
Kanopy is available from the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) with an LAPL library card. LAPL cards are available to all residents of California and all residents of Los Angeles can apply for an E-Card online. Please note that the LAPL Kanopy collection is not identical to the ArtCenter collection and that LAPL allows a maximum of 10 videos per month. Kanopy users who access the service using the Kanopy app, such as those using Kanopy from their TVs, will need to configure their app to switch to the LAPL collection.
We remain committed to providing as broad of access to media for classroom use and research needs as possible. Please contact your liaison librarian with questions.
